wildflowers worth knowing

there are some wildflowers worth knowing
we pluck them from cracks in the sidewalk
their petals stained with soot and disappointment
we try to make them pretty again
with aerosol mist and rose-colored glass
until we get bored
and leave them to wilt in the sun

there are some wildflowers worth knowing
like Nashville Jim who lives on the pier
bastard son of Elvis he cries as he shaves
his legs with rainwater and stolen
cans of Barbasol
and Erika with her lime green hair
and a smile that lights the darkest rooms
where she sucks dick for well water
sometimes just for sport
in the bathroom of the Parkside Inn

there are some wildflowers worth knowing
pressed in the ugly pages of books
better to let them bloom
in the tangle of weeds and moonlight
